Single-leaf interior sliding doors

The interior door has long ceased to be just a functional unit in the house. Today the canvas shows the status of the owner of the house and his taste, lifestyle. It transforms space and saves it. Single-leaf interior sliding doors are just the type that does not take up even a centimeter of free area of the room when opened, in contrast to the usual swing structures.

Sliding door models differ from the usual swing doors by the opening system. If hinged hinges are used, which are attached to the frame and the canvas, then in sliding hinges, a special roller mechanism is used, along which the doors move parallel to the wall. The sliding door also has a frame, but it performs an exclusively decorative function, in contrast to the swing model, where the box is a supporting and retaining structure.

Sliding single-leaf doors cover the standard reception width: 60, 70, 80 or 90 cm.If the opening is wider, choose double-leaf models. The one-leaf sliding structure consists of:

  • Cloths;
  • Movable sash;
  • Opening mechanism: support rails, roller system and stoppers (stopping and locking mechanisms for the door).

The main feature of such doors is their stylish appearance and an unusual opening system, which is especially suitable for small spaces. It creates an original image of the room and makes it more functional, leaves free that square meter, which is usually occupied by a swing leaf.. Among the advantages of a sliding door design, the following characteristics can be distinguished:

  • It opens with a slight movement of the hand, which even a child or an elderly person can handle;
  • Provides soft and quiet opening without sudden movements, jerks;
  • Not afraid of a draft: the sliding door will not slam shut from a gust of wind and will not accidentally hit someone from the household;
  • Saves room space when opening;
  • Equally suitable for an apartment, house or office, and large or modest premises;
  • Does not have a threshold that can interfere with free movement around the apartment;
  • Safe, especially if there are children in the house or a large family lives: the opening door will not hit anyone or hit when it is suddenly opened.

A sliding door simultaneously divides and unites the space of the apartment. It creates a visible ergonomic partition that looks laconic and stylish in a modern and even classic interior..

It is especially suitable for a loft or minimalism, modern, high-tech, where it is important to create an original design of the room..

Now about the disadvantages of a sliding door:

  • It has low heat and noise insulation and is not suitable for a bedroom or a nursery, a balcony or a loggia;
  • Requires free wall space to move. Along the wall and the opening, a sash is attached twice as wide as the canvas;
  • The high cost that you have to pay for a quality opening mechanism. The heavier or wider the door, the stronger the roller mechanism must be, and the higher its price;
  • The fastening and opening mechanisms are very noticeable if the door does not slide inside the opening, that is, it “floats” along the wall.

A sliding door requires wall space for installation and free opening. If the wall is rather thick, then the door to it can be “hidden”: it will open into a niche created in the wall.

Such a door looks outwardly more attractive than the model with an upper bar, but it will cost more..

The type of doors determines the roller mechanism of the sliding system, which is of 3 types:

  1. Hinged. The door leaf is held and moved along one top rail installed at the top of the wall. To do this, you do not need to install an additional lower rail and sink it into the floor for smooth movement around the apartment. The disadvantage of a hinged door is low noise and heat insulation and high cost, since its installation will require a very high-quality and reliable mechanism.
  2. Coupe. Such a door is attached to the top and bottom bar and is moved using a roller system. One guide acts as a base and takes on the weight of the canvas, in fact, independently guides it along the opening, the second supports the door and directs it in the right direction.
  3. Sliding. Such doors are literally retracted into the wall (its niche or an artificially created structure made of drywall). Their fastening mechanisms and guides are hidden from view, so the canvas looks elegant, original and simple. But preparation for the installation of such a door begins at the stage of rough finishing, when a niche is created for opening the door and “invisible” rails are installed..

The canvas also can be different: from 100% solid wood, veneered, painted, laminated. A high-quality door is always based on solid wood, and usually it is pine. Wood is distinguished by its quality characteristics: it insulates noise, retains heat, it is strong and durable. Usually it is covered with natural veneer of expensive wood species: beech, oak, ash, wenge and others. Doors made of 100% solid wood of oak, beech, ash and any other (except pine) are heavy and require a high-quality fastening mechanism: guides, rollers.

A full-fledged design will cost significantly more than a prefabricated model, because the emphasis will be on the quality of the opening mechanism.

Alternative – covering with eco-veneer or film, enamel or lamination. Synthetic material can mimic natural wood with a natural pattern and texture, or, conversely, create a smooth glossy effect. Such models are cheaper than counterparts made of natural veneer, however, a high-quality model inside has an array of pine, most often spliced.

The sliding door can be all glass or with glass elements. To visually divide the space, glass partition doors are usually chosen, intended, rather, for the decoration of the room..

Installation rules

Installation of the sliding door is carried out after the preparation of the doorway and the room as a whole, when the repair is done, the floor and walls are leveled. To do this, it is necessary to dismantle the old door and determine the side of the wall along which the door will “slide” when opened. The preparation includes the installation of a pair of rollers on the upper end of the web. They are mounted on self-tapping screws at a distance of 5-10 cm from the edge. After the knobs and locks are cut.

For self-installation, you will need a working tool:

  • Perforator or drill;
  • Screwdriver or screwdriver set;
  • Self-tapping screws;
  • Hammer;
  • Roulette, level, pencil.

You may need a piece of wood to hold the rails and some wooden wedges. A person who is not associated with such work can install a sliding door, despite the fact that manufacturers recommend entrusting the assembly to a professional craftsman. It is important that the width of the canvas is 5-7 cm more than the width of the opening, otherwise you will have to artificially narrow the opening. Otherwise, unsympathetic gaps will appear between the two rooms..

The door is installed after laying the floor covering. The floor rail is mounted on a flat surface, otherwise the opening system will work intermittently or not work at all.

The box is used to refine the doorway and does not carry a functional load.

Installation Algorithm

Work begins with marking: step back from the line of the upper opening of 7 mm and draw a straight line with a pencil. Attach the timber and secure it with bolts / screws. The beginning of the beam should coincide with the beginning of the opening and not overlap the last one by a millimeter. A guide is attached to the bottom of the timber, holes are made in it for fastening with a step of 20 cm.

Next, the sliding mechanism is assembled: the rollers are connected to the carriages, run over the guides and checked for mobility. The movement should be soft, smooth, unobstructed. The ends are decorated with stopper plugs. Brackets are installed on the upper end of the door. Previously, holes are made on the canvas along these brackets. The door leaf is hung on the brackets to the guides and checked on the move.

Choosing an opening mechanism is not worth saving. He is responsible for the safe fastening and movement of the door, for the reliability of the structure and its flawless operation..

Bottom guide – a guide nut, which is usually included in the set of such accessories or purchased separately. This visible element does not always suit the owner of the room. An alternative to it will be a checkbox, for which you need to make a groove with a cutter and hide the guide in it. The bottom rail is fixed to the floor and is adjustable with bolts and carriages. With a level, be sure to check the location of the door and fastening mechanisms, opening at each stage.

The last step is to install a decorative top strip that will hide the timber and rails. After that the platbands are attached. A sliding system that retracts into a wall is specific and complex. At the stage of rough finishing, a false wall is built and a beam with guide rails is installed. The width of the future opening and its length are taken into account for the smooth movement of the door inside the structure. The canvas itself is attached at the last stage after gluing the wallpaper and laying the floor.
