How to choose a roller for painting the ceiling with water-based paint?

Repair sooner or later will burst into the life of every inhabitant of a modern metropolis, and therefore the choice of attributes for such an event is infrequent. Often, the desire to save on building materials leads to unexpected results. Of course, I want to get a high-quality result: a flat surface, a monochromatic color – in other words, negligence is allowed only in exceptional cases, and painting the ceiling or walls is just not a situation where you should sacrifice aesthetics for the sake of economy.

How to choose?

The choice of the tool remains mainly with the performer of the work. And yet there are fewer and fewer adherents of brushes. Painting almost any surface of a room is faster and more conveniently performed with a roller, which is quite easy to find in modern hardware stores. With the help of a roller, paint is spread and applied to the surface more evenly. In addition, the tool for working with rollers is more technological and practical for use by beginners who do not understand all the intricacies of repair work..

Additionally, it should be noted that paint consumption during roller operation is also reduced due to the lack of the ability of the brush to absorb paint, which means that part of it is sprayed on the sides – this will inevitably lead to overspending of the coloring composition. With a properly selected roller, this will not happen – there will be a clear material saving.

It is better to leave the brushes for the use of harsh and experienced painters or paint any specific things with them, and for rooms it is most economical to use rollers. For hard-to-reach places, of course, you cannot do without a brush, but in a typical room painting (even on a stencil), a roller is an ideal choice.

Another option for a novice painter is a spray gun, but it is hardly possible to find a stably working model for one repair, and it certainly does not make sense to buy a professional version for the sake of 2-3 rooms.

But you can try to rent a spray gun or spray gun – such a pleasure is inexpensive and affordable for an ordinary builder.

Paint and roller

It is necessary to understand whether a particular roller is suitable for working with purchased paint or not. The essence of the problem lies in the composition of the water-based paint. In the domestic building materials market, as a rule, several varieties of such a coloring composition are common:

  • silicone;
  • silicate;
  • mineral;
  • acrylic.

Acrylic water-based paint is perhaps the most commonly used. It contains a large number of acrylic resins and latex. The treated surface is almost 100% moisture resistant and is not even afraid of direct impact. This coating can be washed without any effect on the surface..

The silicone paint contains many complex synthetic compounds. With their help, the paint easily copes with filling small cracks in the surface with a depth of no more than 2 mm. Most often, this paint is applied to coatings that are very often in contact with water. The only drawback of such a coloring composition is its high cost..

Mineral water-dispersion paint contains cements or calcium hydroxide form. This type of water emulsion is ideal for application on walls and ceilings of technical premises, where the scale can be really huge, and there is no point in buying expensive material. The downside of this coating is its quick wear..

Silicate water-based paint contains colored glass as a key component. Such a coating is most often used for facade work and painting the outer contour of the building. This paint can withstand almost any weather conditions throughout its entire service life. Next, you need to decide on the roller. Most often on the building materials market, you can find rollers made of pile, polyamide, foam rubber or velor.

These four materials are approximately in the same price category, but this does not mean at all that you can use a roller from any material in this group..

Foam rubber products are mainly used for working with glue and varnish. And for working with water-based paint, foam rubber is certainly not suitable – it very quickly becomes saturated with the coloring composition and stops absorbing it, which results in stains and splashes. And the foam rollers have to be constantly changed even when working with adhesive.

Lint rollers work better with water-based paint. Nowadays, it is practically impossible to find natural pile in stores, but with synthetic pile the situation is much better – on the shelves it is easy to find rollers with small, medium and long pile. Of course, the choice here should be made based on your own needs, – rollers with long pile absorb a lot of paint, but it is much more difficult for a beginner to work with them.

Therefore, if you choose a roller with a nap, then it is better to stay on a model with a small or medium nap coating..

Velor products are known for their excellent resistance to aggressive media of water-based paint, solvent or varnish. There are no pronounced drawbacks in velor rollers, and therefore they are often used to work on large industrial sites, where the use of a spray gun is excluded for some reason. Polyamide rollers are made from raw materials similar in properties to textiles.

The peculiarity of the production of such products lies in the fact that the pillow at the assembly stage is repeatedly stitched with a strong polymer thread – this significantly increases the strength of the product and its service life.. For the general consumer, the polyamide roller is in the first place. This is especially true where you have to work with acrylic water-based paint..

In the domestic construction markets, you can most often find replaceable rollers of three serial standard sizes:

  • up to 100 mm;
  • 100-150 mm;
  • over 150 mm.

Of course, the choice of the appropriate attachment is only a matter for the buyers. It all depends on what size the drum handle is and what needs to be painted. Generally, a long-handled tool is convenient when working in tall rooms. The standard size of the drum is selected both taking into account the tool, and with an emphasis on the task at hand.

No one argues that work can be done faster with a 300 mm drum, but we add here the height of the walls of 4-5 meters, a telescopic handle and paint saturation of the drum – and the optimism of novice builders immediately disappears, as their hands will simply start to get tired faster..

Preparatory work

To carry out repair work, painters have recently given preference not to disposable rollers, but to a monolithic structure of a drum and a clasp (this is the name of the handle and the axis on which the drum is attached). And instead of a disposable product, covers made of various materials are used, which are changed as needed. The selection principle is the same as for disposable rollers. The materials that are most often used are discussed above..

The most typical situation: the plaster from the ceiling crumbled in parts, the corners darkened, but the whole structure has no specific damage and distortions in the horizontal plane. In this case, you first need to get rid of the old whitewash and plaster by wetting the old layer with plain water from a spray bottle. To remove it, you must use an ordinary metal spatula, which is found in almost every home..

It is necessary to spray water 10-20 minutes before starting work so that it is absorbed and the plaster peels off more easily.

If there was wallpaper or something like that on the plane, then they should also be cleaned together with a layer of glue..

So now there is a blank canvas to paint. But before you open a can of paint, you need to do a lot more body movements. For successful work with the ceiling in a typical room of a still-Soviet building, several layers of primer are used. And the first layer is aseptic. In some cases, the surface is additionally disinfected with chlorine and similar means – it all depends on the specific situation..

The primer must be compatible with the paint. After disinfection, a so-called primer is applied to the surface – a primer polymer composition. After it dries, you can proceed to putty.

It should be clarified that the polymer primer requires several sanding procedures and intermediate work.. Therefore, it will be correct to strictly adhere to the following sequence of actions:

  • A layer of starting putty is applied. The consumption of the composition at this stage is approximately 3 kilograms per 1 sq. square meter.
  • The surface is sanded.
  • The starting composition is applied to those areas where it was not enough after rough grinding.
  • It is necessary to apply the finishing filler to the ceiling surface in a thin layer. Here, the consumption of the composition is 1 kilogram per 1 sq. ceiling meter.
  • Then you need to do the final surface grinding with emery..

How to paint correctly?

It is worth knowing a few basic rules for painting the ceiling with water-based paint:

  • no more than two layers of paint must be applied to the plane;
  • the final layer of the coloring composition is applied in the direction from the window opening – this way there are more chances to hide all the flaws;
  • the entire surface is painted in one go, so that later the difference in shades does not appear.

The uniformity of the color can be checked by moving a little to the side. Unpainted areas are better seen with a sidelong glance, and looking at close range it is not always possible to notice the problem in time. The spots that appear on the fresh layer are immediately removed with a special washcloth, after which the place is painted again. Also, do not forget that between stains, you need to take a long break until the ceiling is completely dry.

Premises up to 15 sq. meters will require about two liters of water-based paint. Work should be carried out during daylight hours. Since the whole process requires the application of two layers, the whole process can take about 3-4 days, taking into account drying.

If you need to give the ceiling a shade of turquoise, then you should use a special dye, which can be easily bought on the same building materials market. The purchased pigment is simply added to the paint can. It is better to test the concentration and color saturation first on a small area of the working canvas or just on a cardboard sheet..

Tips & Tricks

Below are some guidelines for painting ceiling surfaces. You need to get rid of paint slugs on time. Having removed the clot with a washcloth, which should be stocked up in advance, you need to repaint the area with a more liquid composition. In no case should you use a thicker substance – this can ruin all the work..

At the time of the final sanding, it is necessary to walk manually not only with large emery, but also with small ones. Any unevenness left on the surface will ruin the whole view of the room later..

For painting with emulsion paint, you should choose a high-quality paint roller, which is most suitable for its characteristics. They can also whitewash walls..

Use the same type and type of paint for the entire surface. Do not mix two different dyes on the same canvas, as this can result in a very unsightly picture. It is best to choose high quality paint – you can easily buy it in modern hardware stores..
