Built-in wardrobe in a niche

If there is a niche in a room or corridor of an apartment or house, the best solution for its arrangement will be the installation of a wardrobe, which will make the space as functional as possible. The built-in wardrobe is a set of internal elements and a sliding system for opening and closing doors; such a structure does not have a frame (ceiling, bottom, walls in most cases).

Among the advantages of a built-in wardrobe in a niche, it is worth noting the following:

  1. Rational use of space: a built-in wardrobe helps to make the niche as functional as possible and use the rest of the space in the house profitably;
  2. In terms of its parameters, the wardrobe is the most ergonomic model of the wardrobe: due to the lack of walls, bottom and ceiling of the cabinet, sometimes valuable centimeters of additional storage space appear;
  3. The sliding door system does not require additional space to open them: the structures move sideways;
  4. Choosing a sliding wardrobe allows you to save your budget on purchasing several wardrobes and dressers for storage;
  5. The sliding wardrobe acts not only as a “storage” of clothes and shoes, it will also be appropriate to store household items like an ironing board and similar structures, which are bulky in appearance and unsightly for the interior;
  6. The possibility of creating a wardrobe-compartment built into a niche by individual measurements becomes a magic wand for those whose apartment has such a space of non-standard parameters;
  7. Filling the wardrobe model allows you to categorize things; a planning project can be created independently or you can use the services of a furniture company;
  8. Assembly of the wardrobe does not take much time due to the small number of parts, even for a cabinet of impressive size; the most massive parts of such a system are sliding doors – they are supplied ready-made and do not require assembly, only installation.

Among the features of sliding wardrobes, which sometimes scare off potential buyers, is that such a structure is installed “for centuries”, that is, once and almost forever – until the next global repair or failure of their cabinet components (doors or fittings, however, almost every detail cabinet is being repaired). Another important aspect is that the niche where it is planned to mount the structure must have smooth walls, floor and ceiling; otherwise, you will have to level the surfaces yourself thanks to the drywall parts.

A smooth surface for installing parts of the future cabinet and its sliding door system will allow the structure to serve a long service and act as a safe piece of furniture.

If there is a niche in any room of an apartment or house, install a built-in wardrobe there and enjoy its functionality. In the absence of such, you should not despair: you can create a niche yourself from drywall. It is worth noting that the artificially created drywall niche differs in its parameters from the load-bearing wall and is unlikely to withstand the weight of a heavy structure, so choose a small wardrobe and its doors made of light materials. When installing a wardrobe in a plasterboard niche, you will have to choose a case model of the structure with its own frame so that the wardrobe can serve as efficiently as possible.

Facade decoration

The design of the facades of the wardrobe determines how laconic and advantageous it will look in the room. The design of the facade of the doors depends on the concept of your room and its dimensions; mirrors look most advantageous in a small space; in a spacious room, you can allow to install a facade made of wood or glass.

  • Mirrors on the front of the sliding wardrobe look attractive and carry a functional load: you do not have to additionally purchase mirrors for the room where the sliding wardrobe is installed. Since floor-length mirrors have an impressive weight, take care of high-quality fittings made of durable materials.
  • A sandblasting mirror will become an alternative to an ordinary mirror and will create an interesting interior; a wardrobe with a similar design will be appropriate for any room, not only in a modern format, but also with classic finishes and furniture. Sandblasting technology allows you to create original patterns on the mirror and gives the glass a matte effect.
  • Photo printing on the front of the wardrobe is an original way to diversify the interior of the room. Depending on the room, choose a drawing for large-format printing: images of flowers, megacities, cozy cities, natural landscapes, sea coasts, graphic images will become appropriate for a bedroom or living room, corridor or nursery.
  • MDF or chipboard panels – the most budgetary option for decorating a wardrobe; lightness of design, variety of choice of colors and textures allows this material to be the most demanded. Wooden panels are a more expensive alternative, but in the interior all the models look laconic and stylish while respecting the general concept of the room. If such a design of facades seems boring or monotonous, combine MDF panels with a mirror, stained glass, pattern, or create a combination of colors that will help emphasize the geometry of the overall interior..
  • Stained-glass windows allow you to create an unusual design of the room and they are assembled by hand.
  • Glass surfaces on the sliding wardrobe facades enrich the interior and bring a modern character to it. Glossy or matte surfaces create coziness in the room despite their coldness: to avoid this, choose soft and warm colors of the material or a combination of them.

Traditionally, sliding wardrobes for installation in a niche can be divided into two categories: cabinet and built-in. Their differences are significant:

  • The body view of the wardrobe has a frame that is mounted in a niche; the frame of this design has a bottom, ceiling and walls, plus a sliding system and fittings. This design resembles an ordinary cabinet, only the size of the ceiling (if desired, the height of the cabinet can be changed – make it lower).

The cabinet-type wardrobe is installed in a plasterboard niche or one whose wall is not load-bearing, that is, weak and unable to withstand heavy hinged elements.

  • The built-in wardrobe is suitable for those niches that are formed by load-bearing walls: it is safe and practical to fix structures on them, the assembled structure will last a long time. The only condition for installing a sliding wardrobe in a niche is flat surfaces of the walls, floor and ceiling for fixing fittings.

Types of door opening systems

There are two systems: monorail and roller. The first is a monorail system (it is often called a support system) has supports – lower rollers leading the door to the left and right. It is the lower rollers, thanks to the rails, that guide the door when it is opened and closed, while the upper ones support the door facades vertically.

Such a system is the most advantageous in terms of cost; in its work, it is not inferior to the second, provided that the fittings of the wardrobe are made of high-quality aluminum or steel.

The roller system, or a system with a suspension, has its own characteristics: the lower rollers act as support ones, and the upper ones lead the door and completely hold it in an upright position. It is important to choose high-quality fittings to ensure the safety of the structure and its long-term operation; the cost of the roller system of sliding doors will cost more than the first.

Internal filling

Filling the inner space of a wardrobe is an important point in developing a model of a future structure, it is the most functional part of the sketch. Three visually different zones are traditionally mounted inside the cabinet: lower, middle and upper. At the bottom, racks for shoes or shoe racks are traditionally placed, open shelves, bars, hangers for skirts and trousers, drawers are traditionally placed in the middle, a bar for long clothes and open shelves for the least frequently used items and things are installed on top..

  • The bar is found in all wardrobes and allows you to hang clothes on hangers, including long clothes. Choose two or more rods: the height of one of them should not exceed 80 cm (it is optimal to choose 60 cm): it will be used for casual clothes, the other with a height of 100 cm will be used for hanging long and street clothes.

The pantograph is the same bar with the possibility of lowering the structure; they are set as high as possible. The boom width varies up to 90 cm: if the boom is larger, additional support is required.

  • Open shelves are an integral part of any cabinet; the optimal depth of the shelves is from 40 to 70 cm, the width is up to 60 cm (it is better to make more shelves of small width), the height is determined based on the personal wishes of the consumer, optimally 35-40 cm.
  • Drawers are designed for storing underwear and hosiery; their dimensions correspond to the parameters of open shelves, because often these structures are located under them.
  • Shoe compartments and shelves: arrange them at the bottom for efficient use of space. For easy storage, you can choose designs with pads for putting on shoes or shoe racks: shallow drawers with vertical placement of wardrobe items.

Sliding wardrobe for different rooms

Often, it is in the hallways that there are niches for building a wardrobe, therefore, when planning its filling, special attention should be paid to the compartment for storing outerwear and shoes. Allow one of the parts (half) of a small wardrobe or one third of a spacious closet to be given specifically for outer and seasonal clothes, shoes and accessories such as umbrellas, hats, scarves, mittens.

The facade of the wardrobe for the hallway must have at least one full-length mirror: this will allow you not to buy an additional piece of furniture and save space.

The location of the wardrobe in the bedroom should be appropriate, it is good if there is a niche for the future design, if not, make it yourself simply by using drywall. Filling the wardrobe is a more important task, take care of the rational arrangement of the shelves: let them be low. Think carefully about the design of the facades of the future construction: they may have mirrors or not, depending on the dimensions of the room and its design. It is preferable to choose wood as facade materials instead of chipboard or MDF, since the first material is environmentally friendly and allows the structure to “breathe”; adhesives and additional materials that have an unpleasant odor are not used for wood processing.

A wardrobe is also suitable for a living room: decorate the facades of the structure in an original way and get an unusual interior. Think about the design of the front of the cabinet in advance: it is important that they match the design of the room and emphasize its interior.
